Advanced Practice Paramedic Program Recognition

Today, November 1, 2010, at their regularly scheduled meeting, the Wake County Board of Commissioners recognized the County’s Advanced Practice Paramedic Program (APP).  The APP program received the Distinguished Program Excellence Award during the 96th Annual Awards Program at the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Conference.  The award recognizes local government programs that demonstrate innovation and excellence, and improve the community’s quality of life.

The APP program uses the key concepts of Respond, Reduce and Redirect to improve the efficiency of EMS service delivery. APPs respond to serious calls to ensure there is always at least one paramedic on a scene with recent critical care experience for assistance with high level care. They reduce the frequency of medical crises in high-risk populations by conducting regular in-home visits for citizens with targeted medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart failure and childhood asthma. They redirect care for citizens with substance abuse and mental health issues, by helping facilitate entry into the most appropriate treatment center.
