As hurricane Irene approached North Carolina, the Wake County EMS System mobilized several assets including its USAR Medics. Task Force 8, a FEMA equivalent type I USAR team, was put on alert Thursday night and deployed Friday to eastern North Carolina. 6 Paramedics from Wake County EMS Division and 68 firefighters from Task Force 8 were deployed by State Emergency Management as a level I structural collapse team.
In addition to the USAR Medics, Wake County mobilized an ambulance strike team including its multi-patient transport bus.
